How to pass the Idaho knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Idaho manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Idaho law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Idaho written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 40 34 correct (6 mistakes allowed) 15 years
Motorcycle 25 20 correct (5 mistakes allowed) Valid Idaho driver's license required; applicants under 21 must also complete an approved rider training course
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. Class D knowledge test. The handbook states the test has 40 questions and that an applicant may miss up to six before failing. Applicants must be at least 15 to take the knowledge and skills tests.

Motorcycle. ITD confirms a motorcycle knowledge test is required and that it is drawn from the Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, but neither the handbook nor the ITD website publishes the number of questions or the passing score. The counts shown here are not confirmed by an official source.

CDL. General Knowledge test. The Idaho CDL manual publishes 50 questions with a minimum of 40 correct. The manual's fee schedule lists CDL products for ages 18 to 21, but ITD does not state a minimum CDL age in plain text.
